Roll forming pluses and minuses
Midwest Metal Fabrication offers heavy gauge roll forming services. Roll forming offers a number of distinct advantages over other metal fabricating methods.
Roll forming advantages
Advantages of roll forming compared to other metal fabricating methods include:
- Increased production speeds - Midwest Metal Fabrication roll formers can attain production speeds of 50 to 600 feet per minute with light gage material and 50 to 100 feet per minute running heavy gauge material.
- Higher volumes - Midwest Metal Fabrication’s roll formers achieve high volume runs while making uniform and accurately dimensioned parts.
- Minimized labor costs - Our heavy gauge roll formers produce roll formed metal parts with little handling, minimizing labor costs, by loading coils at the starting end of the roll forming machine and removing the finished parts at the other end.
- Reduced maintenance costs - Roll forming is a low maintenance metal deformation process. Midwest Metal Fabrication’s form rolls produce several million feet of product before they need replacement reducing process costs.
- Multi-process combination - Our roll forming equipment allows us to easily combine punching or other fabrications operations into the roll forming process.
- Increased part length - Midwest Metal Fabrication’s roll forming equipment can produce part lengths with each piece up to 40 feet long eliminating weld joints when using shorter pieces.
Roll forming limitations
Even with the stated advantages of roll forming, Midwest Metal Fabrication personnel have noted a few limitations of the roll forming process. These include:
- Potential part end flare - During roll forming operations a slight flare is created at the ends of the metal workpiece when the piece is cut off at the proper length. The flare can be corrected, but it is a separate operation.
- Adjustment difficulty - It is critical that the exact shape of the roll formed piece must be known in advance, because little adjustment can be made to the roll form tooling.
