Painting and surface coating refer to the processes used to apply organic resin containing materials, whether decorative, functional, or protective, to the surface of a component, part, or finished product. While there is no exact definition, painting normally refers to the application of films up to 25-30 mils thick, while coating is often used to describe the process of applying films up to 100-200 mils. This is most commonly true for finishes that are protective and/or functional rather than decorative.
Painting or coating is often used to protect these units from the effects of corrosion, to identify the product as a safety hazard, or to define a specific product function.
