Cutting grooves (grooving)

Cutting grooves (grooving) - photo

Cutting grooves (grooving services) at Midwest Metal Fabrication.

Grooving is a machining operation that uses a single-point cutoff tool to sever a complete section of a workpiece from the raw stock cutting grooves to a specified depth in one pass by a form tool. Grooving does not sever a complete section from the workpiece. In both parting and grooving, a tool moves radially with respect to a rotating workpiece.

Grooving overview

Midwest Metal Fabrication machinists use engine lathes and turret lathes to perform our grooving operations.

Grooving process characteristics

The standard grooving process has a number of inherent characteristics. These include:

  • Advancing a single-point cutting tool radially into a rotating workpiece,
  • Severing the workpiece from the stock,
  • Using tools that are the same shape as the desired groove form, and
  • Removing fabricated material in the form of chips.

Materials

We commonly groove both steel and aluminum for our customers requiring fabricated parts and components.

We can also groove various aluminum alloys, T1 and T2 aluminum, brass, copper, galvanized steel, stainless steel, and pre-painted metals.

Workpiece geometry/shapes

Midwest Metal Fabrication’s machinists are capable of producing a number of common shapes during grooving. See the schematic to the right.

Tool materials

We only utilize steel tools during our grooving operations.

Part size

Midwest Metal Fabrication machinists are capable of grooving parts from 10” W x 2” H x 10” L to 10’ W x 2’ H x 10’ L.

Tolerances

We are capable of holding a tolerance of +/- 0.005” during our grooving operations.

Complementary services

Midwest Metal Fabrication offers drilling, tapping, turning, and milling among other complementary machining services for our custom fabricated metal parts or components to complement our groove cutting and other machining processes.
