Surface grinding services
Surface grinding is an abrasive machining process in which abrasive particles, bonded into a grinding wheel, remove small amounts of material from a workpiece. The grinding wheel may be shaped to form a variety of workpiece geometries. To view details about Midwest Metal Fabrication’s surface grinding services, select one of the links below:
Surface grinding overviewMidwest Metal Fabrication offers surface grinding services to customers requiring their fabricated parts or components receive surface grinding to remove small bits and pieces adhering to the workpiece surface. Surface grinding process characteristics
MaterialsMidwest Metal Fabrication’s operators commonly surface grind steel, aluminum, brass, and mild steel. We can also surface grind T1 and T2 aluminum, various aluminum alloys, copper, cold rolled steel, hot rolled steel, galvannealed, high strength, low alloy, steel, and hot-dipped galvanized G-90 through G-235, various steel alloys, and pre-painted metals. Workpiece geometry/shapesWorkpiece shapes can be square, rectangular, circular, or ovoid. Surface grinding reduces the surface roughness from 30-40 microinches to 8-10 microinches. Setup and equipmentMidwest Metal Fabrication surface grinding equipment consists of an abrasive wheel, a reciprocating table, and a workpiece holding device. We rotate the abrasive wheel and feed in into the workpiece. We can secure the workpiece magnetically or by using adhesives. Tool styleWe use many of the tool styles originally standardized by the Grinding Wheel Manufacturers Association. Tool materialsWe use the common abrasive materials for surface grinding wheels. These include:
Part sizesMidwest Metal Fabrication uses surface grinding on fabricated parts or components as small as 1” W x 4” L x 1/4” H up to parts that are 12” W x 48” L x 6” H. TolerancesOur Midwest Metal Fabrication personnel can achieve tolerances of +/- 0.001” during surface grinding. Complementary servicesWe offer drilling, turning, milling, tapping, and grooving among other complementary machining services for our custom fabricated metal parts or components.
