Cylindrical grinding services
Cylindrical grinding is an abrasive machining process in which material is removed from the external surface of a metallic or nonmetallic cylindrical workpiece by rotating the grinding wheel and workpiece in opposite directions while they are in contact with one another. The workpiece is mounted between centers and is rotated by means of a workpiece holder (grinding dog or center driver.) Cylindrical grinding overviewMidwest Metal Fabrication offers centerless grinding services to customers requiring their fabricated parts or components receive grinding to remove small bits and pieces adhering to the surface of a cylindrical metallic or nonmetallic workpiece. Cylindrical grinding process characteristics
MaterialsMidwest Metal Fabrication’s operators commonly cylindrically grind steel and aluminum. We can also centerless grind T1 and T2 aluminum, various aluminum alloys, copper, cold rolled steel, hot rolled steel, high strength, low alloy, steel, and various steel alloys. Workpiece geometry/shapesWorkpiece shapes can be cylindrical, tapered cylinders, and stepped cylinders. Cylindrical grinding normally reduces the surface roughness from 8-32 microinches. Setup and equipmentMidwest Metal Fabrication cylindrical grinding equipment consists of a cylindrical grinding machine that holds a grinding wheel, two centers between which the workpiece is suspended, and a grinding dog, chuck, or other driving mechanism. The wheel and the workpiece move relative to one another allowing the workpiece to be ground along its entire length. Tool StyleWe use many of the grinding wheel face contours originally standardized by the Grinding Wheel Manufacturers Association. We can create specialized shapes if needed. Tool materialsWe use the common abrasive materials for cylindrical grinding wheels. These include:
Part sizesMidwest Metal Fabrication uses cylindrical grinding on fabricated parts or components as small as 1” W x 4” L x 1/4” H up to parts that are 12” W x 48” L x 6” H. TolerancesOur Midwest Metal Fabrication personnel can achieve tolerances of +/- 0.005” for diameter and +/- 0.001” for roundnessduring cylindrical grinding processes Complementary servicesWe offer drilling, turning, milling, tapping, and grooving among other complementary machining services for our custom fabricated metal parts or components.
