Are all of your fabricating processes performed in the United States?

Yes, in fact all our heavy gauge metal fabricating processes are performed in our two facilities located in Gary, Indiana. Regardless of the size or weight of the fabricated component or part, we have access to excellent rail, truck, air, and ship options to get the parts or components shipped quickly.

How do you define heavy gauge?

At Midwest Metal Fabrication, when we say we can fabricate heavy gauge materials, we mean it. We can bend steel bars up to 2 inches thick and are capable of brake forming steel up to 1 inch thick. We form steel plate up to 7-gauge. We perform corrugated sheet curving on steel up to 10-gauge and we roll form steel up to 7-gauge or ¼ inch. We flame cut sheet steel or steel plate up to 8 inches thick and plasma cut steel up to 1/4 inch thick. We are serious about our capabilities to fabricate heavy gauge steel at Midwest Metal Fabrication!

Do you also fabricate large components or parts?

Absolutely! We bend bar stock up to 10 feet long and plate steel up to 20 feet long. Our press brakes can handle material 23 feet long, one of the longest capabilities in the U.S. We sheet curve steel with a part bed size length of 20 feet. Our roll form run out tables are 40 feet long. We band saw solid or tubular metal pieces up to 20 feet long. Our blanking presses can shear metal up to 23 feet long.

Midwest Metal Fabrication’s flame cutting bed accommodates pieces up to 40 feet in length and 18 feet wide and the same holds true for our plasma arc cutting. When anyone at Midwest Metal Fabrication speaks about our capabilities to fabricate “large” parts or components, we stand behind what we say!

What kind of welding services do you provide?

Midwest Metal Fabrication offers many types of welding processes based upon the needs and requirements of our customers and the materials being used to fabricate their components or parts. We provide certified standard welding services such as:

  • Gas metal arc welding (MIG)
  • Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW)
  • Pulse-on-pulse welding
  • Electric resistance spot welding, and
  • Submerged arc welding.

Additionally, we offer robotic welding services for those customers whose projects have that requirement.

Will Midwest Metal Fabrication weld galvanized steel?

Yes. We are one of the few Midwest area metal fabrication shops that doesn’t shy away from welding galvanized steel. We have designed our welding area with a special ventilation system the removes the noxious fumes generated by welding galvanized steel.

What processes do you use to finish a part or component?

We use two different finishing processes depending on the project. Midwest Metal Fabrication offers barrel tumbling parts and components using loose abrasives to clean, descale, deburr, and deflash them.

We also use chemical degreasing to remove foreign substances from the surface of a metal workpiece. We only use non-caustic, biodegradable, chemicals in our degreasing process.

Do you perform the final painting or surface coating of a part or component?

Yes, we perform all our painting and surface finishing operations in-house. We perform the surface preparation operations using mechanical and chemical surface cleaning operations. We can then air gun spray or dip coat depending on the part or component’s requirements. Finally, we have significant paint curing facilities and can air dry or oven dry finished parts or components.
